You can’t be sure you’re on the right path without a map. And techs can’t fix a vehicle if they don’t know what’s broke. A good measurement system provides that guide for technicians, and using one should be a standard part your estimate and repair procedures. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be a hassle. Let’s look at the step-by-step process for using LaserLock, our multipoint measuring system, for your initial assessment.

 1. Pull Up the Vehicle Infolaser_lock

The first step in performing collision repairs is determining where you need to be. You’ll need to refer to the frame specifications for the vehicle you’re working with to help you see what damage has been done, judge how bad it is and check if repairs were completed accurately. The LaserLock Live MappingTM system has reliable vehicle information for a wide variety of cars and trucks. Pull it up on the included computer and then move to the next step.

 2. Hang the Targets

The LaserLock system comes with 45 hanging targets. On-screen photos will show you which targets the system recommends and where to place them. This step is just a matter of following those recommendations. These light-reflecting targets will reveal the damage in the next stage of the process.

 3. Position the Scanner Under the Vehicle

Now it’s time for the scanner to do its thing. Put the included tray in the center section of the vehicle and then place the scanner in the tray (it doesn’t need to be square with the vehicle). The rotating laser lights on the scanner reflect off the targets, and the scanner transfers the info it gathers to the computer via the included cable.

 4. Get Your Info

The computer triangulates the data it receives and calculates the damage, showing where the vehicle is out of alignment—including by how much and in what direction. Armed with this information, you can decide what repairs need to be made and plot out the various tasks: whether it needs to go to the frame machine, when it will need to be painted, etc. You can print out your info to share with your team or even show it to your customer and their insurance company.

There’s a tutorial available on the computer if you have trouble with any of the steps, but the process is very straightforward, with plenty of help and directions along the way. LaserLock is a powerful and exceptionally useful tool, but it’s also simple to use.
